Sanctuary Spotlight: Wild Animal Sanctuary

All across the world, wild animals are used and abused in every way possible. Whether used for entertainment, religious rituals, breeding for pets etc; the captive wildlife crisis is very real.

In Keenesburg, Colorado is a large sanctuary dedicated to giving a life-long home for wild animals that have survived and been rescued from the worst of circumstances. There is a coyote who was used in sanitaria rituals, a bear used as bait for training dogs to hunt, many tigers and others who were saved from a display window in Mexico. The life stories I was told while given a close-up tour were heartbreaking, each one more horrific than the last. I have great respect for the strict manner in which the sanctuary is run. For instance, I was not allowed to take any photographs or videos while on the ground with the animals. That way the animals can keep their feelings of safety and comfort without unwanted intruders. (Because of that, the only photos I took are from above and far away)

TWAS travels all across the world, saving animals from dreadful situations and brings them to their own large acreage habitat with specialized diets. They also make a special effort to educate the public. They are open for visitors who can see them from above on a specially built walkway. Dressed in bright orange are volunteers and employees available for any questions that may arise.

It was very clear that their number one focus is the well being of the animals, and while there, I saw the building of even more improvements and expansions. If you are passing through, make sure to spend some time here. Even more so, if you live in the area, sign up to be a volunteer. Be a part of such a wonderful organization and help put an end to the exploitation of wild animals.
