Sanctuary Spotlight: Kindness Ranch

Out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by ranch country lies a beautiful sanctuary with the most picturesque land I have been to on my trip. The Kindness Ranch Sanctuary offers a safe haven for those who have been used in laboratories, focusing on rehabilitating them in a comfortable home-like setting.

Unlike other sanctuaries, Kindness has an adoption program set up for the dogs and cats that are healthy enough. Those who are too old or unable to be rehabilitated will live out their lives at Kindness with no threat of euthanasia. Kindness has an agreement with various schools and companies who retire their animals to them; that way they have a second chance at a happy life.

One of the most important jobs the employees here have is to create a normal home atmosphere for those who have never been exposed to it. Many do not understand the concept of taking a walk or socializing with people and other dogs. So a normal schedule is formed so they may become used to it and allow for potential adopters. Although sanctuaries normally don't adopt, in this situation it is necessary. Since the goal of Kindness Ranch is to rescue laboratory animals, they receive animals on a consistent basis. Therefore to avoid overcrowding, they must find good homes for them outside of the sanctuary. The sheep, pigs and horses rescued, however, remain here for their lifetime. With the large acreage and freedom to roam, they have been given a true nirvana.

Kindness, like many others, wish to expand even more. They absolutely have the space for it! And until animal testing is stopped, sanctuaries that focus on them is critical. To help, volunteer, visit, adopt or anything else, visit their site at: http://kindnessranch.org/
